ANTH3301: Fundamentals of Anthropological Genetics

This course examines how anthropologists apply genetic approaches to investigate human evolutionary history. Students will learn how the study of modern and ancient genomes has informed understanding of major anthropological questions related to hominid evolution, human adaptation, the peopling of the world, health in the past and present, ancestry testing and forensic identification. Students will also become familiar with basic concepts as well as major laboratory and analytical methods used in the fields of human evolutionary and population genetics, paleogenomics and forensics. Throughout the course, students will engage with the ethical issues posed by genetic technologies, especially as pertains to research with underrepresented communities, discussions of race and identity, commercial genetic testing, and forensic genetic genealogy.
